Setting up home web server with DHCP
I am looking into a company called dynDNS.org. I want to have my low traffic web site located on my home computer (I have cable internet) but I have a dynamic IP address. I believe this site offers a service that alows you to change the IP address for your web site. I think the way it works is a user trys to log onto myDomain.com and the DNS server sends them to one of dynDNS.org's DNS servers. They keep a link to myDomain.com that can be updated whenever is needed and I believe they have a program that simplifies this. Has anyone tried this service or maybe something similar with a different company?
I have a few concerns though. My first is that I read some where that my ISP could have a firewall that blocks requests to anything on port 80. I do not know the exact form that requests to a web server take or if ISPs can diffrentiate between that and normal traffic. My second concern is that I can get all this set up and running perfectly. But then I get in trouble with my ISP because they do not allow this sort of thing. Lastly I guess I am concerned that if my ISP goes down for any reason that so will my site. But I think dynDNS.org has a service that allows you to redirect traffic if this happens. Thanks for any help. Geo |

I have a friend that uses this service w/o problems. He too is on cable. If your ISP blocks port 80, you can have dynDNS.org go to a different port, like 8080. As far as getting in trouble, as long as you don't begin to use a lot of bandwidth, you'll have no problems. I wouldn't sweat it.
The router I use at my house (NetGear), actually has a setup for dynDNS.org. You can enter your username / password for your dynDNS.org account and when the router gets a different IP address from your ISP, it updates for you. Very nice. I would assume most have something like this.
