Question user authentication

Hello,
I am relatively new to web design, and am building a site for a company a friend and I are trying to start. We want one section to be a customer-only area, and we manually create user accounts (visitors won't even see the option to create a new account). I know this involves some sort of server-side scripting, such as CGI or PHP, but not much more beyond that. Would anyone be kind enough to point me in the right direction? I tried Googling for it, but I don't really have the time to browse through several pages of junk to find the little bit I need. Thanks in advance.

depending on what u are using for designing your website. Most high end html editors already have this function built in. I use dreamweaver and the option is already there.
