Web Design Awards / Competitions?

I'm wondering what type of credible Design Competitions are around. Especially competitions geared towards independent developers.

I know of Web Awards but they seem to be all about corporations. Plus there's a pretty steep entry fee.

I think something called the 'Golden web award' is free - did a quick search of google to try and find website, but it only came up with the winners! Can't remember the address

IMHO you can get awards for doing diddly squat and in most cases are absolutely worthless - put their banner / logo on your site and oh, provide a link to that site too.</sceptical>

I see what you are saying jabba but some people like getting little trophies to put on their sites - and even if they are given to virtually everyone - it gives them confidence in their site

I think it's a shame though that there's not a legitimate place for web designers to compete to sharpen their skills. Seems like there's an outlet for every other type of media. I know web design is pretty subjective, but so are movies, music, and all art for that matter.

I'd never ruin the layout of my site by sticking one of those aweful award graphics on it. They're essentially just a different type of link exchange program. But I think competition is a great way to improve.

Thats a good idea - there could be a 'Web design competition' section under Web design
