We want to redesign our website from theground up and make it much more dynamic/ user orientated. We know that we need to use a server side technology but which wold be the best to use? ASP, PHP, Coldfusion. I am used to using Dreamweaver and I can code HTML by hand but I'm really not the brightest button at language coding, although I've never had much chance to learn before. My company will want fast results (don't they all!). We will not be selling over the internet, but we have quite a big catalogue.
Also any suggestions on the database to use? Thanks |

PHP for a scripting language and MySQL for database. The best combination out there, especially for a beginner. The reason being most servers support PHP and it's an open source language so most of the scripts for it are free. Also, the pay scripts are usually of a high quality due to the fact that most people can get a free script that does approximately the same thing forcing people who sell commercial PHP scripts to make a higher quality product.
If you are developing on a corporate level Coldfusion is good, as well as JSP. I don't recommend ASP ( my personal opinion ) as: 1. It's made by Microsoft so it's a proprietary technology. 2. PHP does everything ASP does and usually better. 3. There are less scripts available for it because of Reason 1. There are other people who swear by ASP, but I don't know why. I have experience developing with ASP and PHP seems to be a more complete solution. |
