Why should anyone use a footer with links?
What realistic purpose does having a footer with various links to the site pages server?
The user can access these same things through the header/sidebar menu - and people aren't dumb (anymore) they know how to navigate something. Plus they might not see the footer until scrolling down. I understand sometimes this helps with SEO as they're direct text links, but does it REALLY help at all, can anyone show that it's an SEO improvement? Why shouldn't a footer just have the standard copyright? |

I would put links in the footer to less important pages, such as a privacy policy, contact page, and other legal information

it helps with SEO, every link and backlink counts so it can help quite a bit, think about Dev Shed's footer. Being mentioned in there is going to get millions of hits from google bots etc.
I too put copyright notice and links to privacy policy, TOC, disclaimer, and a link to the contact form or help/faq section. Also debugging info is sometimes useful to put there, things like server load, users online, mysql queries running, or server # (ie, like Dev Shed's). HTH, computer |
