What web design language should I learn?

I want to learn web design. Not to be hired as a web designer but to design my own business site. I know some (a little) HTML. Is there another language that i should be focusing on that may be easier or better or do i pretty much start with HTML and get very good with that before moving on to something else...

Hello. Yes you should get a firm grasp on HTML, but learn CSS at the same time. Hopefully, any good tutorial or book on HTML should introduce CSS at an early stage.

HTML and CSS are the foundation for all web design/ pages. HTML provides the basic structure and content for the page and CSS provides the formatting and layout details.

Later on you could study JavaScript to provide interactivity within the page (animations, form validation, etc.) or a language such as PHP (a server-side language) to interact with a database, or provide different content according to the user of your page.

Start from the basic, master HTML, then after that study the more complex languages such as CSS, PHP, Javascripts etc

Yeah I would agree with the rest of the posts. HTML + CSS. Then you should move to javascript, php and mysql. Those are the biggest names in the game.

HTML is your foundation. The rest of the languages make the site dynamic and functional.

Once you've got a handle on HTML/CSS, basic PHP can really help streamline even basic website development.

    Yes, learn HTML and CSS.

A great book that helped me out when I first started is "Head First HTML with CSS & XHTML" by Freeman & Freeman

You also need to do some research into web standards, usability and accessibility to learn what makes a good website design.

From the my point of the view there are so many types of the languages available but among all of them I would like to suggest PHP is the best web design language because it directly refer to HTML and also it is best server side scripting language.
