1 & 1 control panel any good?

I want to get a dedicated server. I am thinking about 1 & 1 or hostgator. 1 & 1 are cheaper (about $120 cheaper a month comparing their cheapest servers!!) but they dont use cpanel they have their own control panel. Has anyone used her used it? Is it any good? If it isnt as good as cpanel, is it worth the difference in cost??

I have never had a dedicated server before so I want to go for a managed one. Both offer managed services but is one company really going to be a lot better than the other one?

thanks

If you are getting a dedicated then you can put whatever control panel youw ant on it. Cpanel licenses not internal is around $35/month.

Ive heard that their home made control panel is terrible. I agree with the above post. If you can and get a VPS or dedicated server try and go with Cpanel. Most of your customers will recognize and know how to use it. This then reduces the amount of support time you need to put in

Also if your going for a dedicated make sure to check out some of the main dedicated server providers, 1&1 and hostgator both specialize in shared hosting, so their dedicated prices are pretty high.

Check out http://www.limestonenetworks.com/ (usually some GREAT deals) and http://theplanet.com

Thank you for those links. The paradox of choice

serverpoint say:

Quote:
Unlimited dedicated bandwidth (100mbps port Ethernet port) [add $799.00/mo]
and:
Upgrade to 100mbps uplink port [add $25/mo]

What is the difference between the two?

Whilst hostgator say:

Quote:
Is the connection on our servers 10mbps burstable to 100mbps or 100mbps constant?

100mbps constant
Is the connection on our servers 100mbps up and down or just 100mbps total?

100mbps both up and down

Managed dedicated servers have a 100mbps connection, but unmanaged dedicated servers have a 10mbps connection.

So for the $799 a month that serverpoint want, are hostgator already giving it with all their servers? You can tell I am a noob but I need a dedicated server.

Also how good are http://www.limestonenetworks.com/ and http://theplanet.com in terms of support? The reason I tend mention hostgator is because I have used their shared hosting and they have very good support.

10mbps is unmetered, you can push roughly 3TB in and out. If you do the upgrade to 100mb port option, you will get 100mbps speeds, but limited to 3TB per month, I assume.

Otherwise 100mbps you can push about 30TB in and out per month. I highly doubt those are dedicated ports though, you'll never really see full speed most of the time.

Don't use 1and1, unless you are going to get cPanel/Direct Admin installed, most people do not know how 1and1's control panel works, and it's not that easy to work with.

Are you going to host websites for yourself, or do you plan to host for other companies?
