A simple question.....

Hey all,
I am new to the whole web hosting thing,
but nonetheless am interested.
I was wondering, when you purchase
space from a company, say www.supermanhosting.com
(this, of course is hypothetical)
do all your sites have to begin www.supermanhosting......
or do you get to choose your own names and so forth.

If someone could give me a quick lesson, i would
appreciate it. Thanks.

You can choose your own name by going to a registrar and paying around $8 to register it. You can go to my site http://domains.fwwebs.com and look around. There's a help section to check out as well. Once you register your domain name, you can sign up for hosting and once your activated you'll receive and email giving you your nameserver information. You then go back to your registrar, enter that information and you'll be up and running in about 72 hours. There are some hosting companies that will register the domain for you, but while that's simple you loose direct control of you registration. You must send requests to your host for any changes you'd like.

Without spamming for myself here is a few options for you:

You can register a domain name with anyone and have it hosted anywhere. I am a big fan of godaddy.com or ev1servers.net (they used to have $6.5 domains).

You can also have a subdomain with most hosting companies. If you are using your service with them to just host an FTP account you do not need to spend the extra money on registering a domain. Using a subdoamin (yoursite.yourhost.com) would work just fine for you.

If you want to have your website be http://www.mysite.com/ then you would need to register your own domain name. To get your domain name to point to your hosting company you would modify the nameservers or DNS settings. Once you sign up with a hosting company most will send you an email with instructions on getting your domain to point to their servers.

Good luck!
