About hosting

Hi everyone,
I am a new learner to Web Hosting area, would you please show me how to host a website on net, for example. www.mydomain.com ... I am using ADSL connection, if I have a fixed IP address, is it possible for me to host a web site on that IP adress, and how can I do it.
I have to host my website through a company like Yahoo... or I can host it at my home using my computer?
Thank you very much for your time.

You will want to install Apache (www.apache.org) to get started. Depending on how you installed your OS, you may already have all the software installed.

But I strongly recommend you only use it for local testing only. As you will need to configure your DNS and probably other programs like MySQL and PHP.
