I have seen affiliate programs vary from 5% to 80%

I myself give 30% on every deal so 5 is very low, 20 is or "normal" or what you would call it.

There are plenty out there to choose from, what made you choose them?

ServerPoint.com offers nice affiliate program - $60 commission. It sounds great for me.
What does the amount of commissions depend on?

The percent you get usually depends on the type of the hosting package you sell for your host.
Do you mean you get the fixed sum no matter what Serverpoint.com package you sell?

I think that you need to check how it works first of all on Hqhost.net.
I think that when you are trying to affiliate company through your web site:
1. You do not lose affiliates you drive to the main company (check how people become your affiliates)
2. Use only trusted company.
I believe that you have checked hqhost.net and it satisfy the requriments I have mentored.

I have found that SiberName.com offer their affliates to make 25% profit for the first year and 15% for the following years.
I think these are decent commissions.

5-20% is... WEAK!

FOr a hosting affiliate program, that is kind of weak. Check out CJ -- lots of hosts are paying flat commissions ranging from $100 to $150 per sale. That is typically a lot more than 1 year revenue that most hosts take in right away. My old company used to pay as much as $150 per hosting referrer client and we would gamble on the client staying with us for a long period of time to make up the commission via renewal fees.
