hi all i am new to this area and i was just wondering if any1 could tell me what i would need to strat my own server? i do not have a clue, i was also wnodering what sort of internet connection you would reccomend that my sever has for best results! and i also wondered how does it become a server? do i have to register it some how so i can then host my game and any sites my friends make? cheers for any info! ![]() |

To start out with, you need to have a internet provider that allows you to run a server on their network and you should have a static IP or you will have problems.
Secondly, if you have a choice of internet connections, I would suggest SDSL with as large of upstream bandwidth that you could afford. Most home broadband internet connections cap your upstream at 128-384kbps. 384kbps isn't too bad, but you can hardly serve up anything on 128kbps.

Most cable companies block port 80 (http) incoming. So, if you want to publish a website to the Internet from home, DSL will be the better option. Still - check with your ISP. Or get a regular hosting account ....
