I personally think the GUI that godaddy has is a bit confusing and bloated compaired to opensrs. Although godaddy does have some good pricing too.

Thumbs up Good

Something like downtime wont be affected by the Registar, rather where you DNS records are hosted.

I have several clients that got their domains thru godaddy.com, its a fairly decent service for the price.

DNS records?? My site seems to go down at least a few hours a day each month or so. So this doesn't have anything to do with my web hosting provider, but rather who my DNS records are with?

If so, where do I look for a DNS server with excellent uptime?

Thanks

for some, the webhosts and registrar are the same thing, for others they are different companies, I suggest you look into purchasing hosting from a company, like Chronichosting.com, to avoid having your domain/webhosting at the same place

Wink Name Server Responses

If you look at your WHOIS information, for example one of my clients.

http://www.whois.sc/loreguardians.com or
http://www.whois.sc/omniaphexx.com
You'll see
Name Server: NS1.DOLLARDNS.ORG NS2.DOLLARDNS.ORG

This is where the information on your website comes from, when someone types in www.lorguardians.com the browser asks ns1.dollardns.org "whats the IP?" and then it gets 68.54.24.192

If the machine at ns1.dollardns.org doesnt respond then you can get an error page "The page cannot be displayed"

the point of having ns1 and ns2 is for redundancy which sometimes doesnt always help, depends on how they have it setup.

One reason I hope to establish my own system soon that has servers in two seperate locations

nothinfacd,

For domains godaddy is just fine. I also like cheap-domainregistration.com

For hosting I would personally not use a registrar for that. Why? Most registrars just got into the hsoting business and they all seem to be doing it now and I have not seen pricing like you can get from hosting companies.

Good luck!

"How's the uptime (downtime) of your web sites??"

As requested: none

My site has never been ofline due to godaddy

But, a few beefs

*No 1-800 # for support
*When I called for support the guy I spoke to didn't have a slightest on what the hell I wanted even though it was simple and later I found it right in front of me.

Other than that, 100% uptime, when ever I have called there is someone on the phone to talk to

I have 9 domains with godaddy.com and am very happy

godaddy.com

Never had a problem with godaddy. I have 20 domains with them. When I wanted to combine two accounts to one account one phonecall bang.. done. Very good company to deal with unlike register.com.

is it a good place to buy hosting?

is godaddy.com a good place to buy web hosting? I used to be on entryhost but when comparing the smallest packages entry host has more room but less bandwidth and cost about a dollar more a month.

I don't think they are... there are plenty of small companys out there where you can get a better deal, by making that post I bet about 19 hosts just sent you am email or something. Best of luck!
