BurstNET Business Practices
Greetings All!
I just purchased a reseller account from Nocster, along with a block of static IPs. The entire block for this new account is listed at spews.org as Level 2. Of course, only moderate email testing showed that many ISPs are blocking Level 2 addresses as well. When I pointed out to the BurstNET staff that they "must have made a mistake" by issuing me tainted addresses they replied: ######################### The SPEWS listing on these IPs is a Level 2 block ONLY, not a Level 1 block. Level 2 listings are a "watch" listing, while Level 1 listings are a "block" listing. Level 2 blocks are not service affecting, and nothing can be done to correct such except wait for enough time to pass by for SPEWS top move them to Level 0 (removed listing). Level 2 blocks have already had action taking to remove the spammers/abusers, and nothing more can be done on the part of the ISP/Host further. If there is a random ISP that you are having problems with that IS blocking a Level 2 listing, it is because they are mis-using the SPEWS system, and we recommend you contact them directly and ask them to "whitelist" (unblock) your specific IPs. ######################## Some of the email that was bouncing during earlier tests is now getting through but I cannot re-check the listing because SPEWS is apparently under attack (again). My questions are: How often do ISPs update (on average) their anti-spam/spews blocking? Can I expect this problem to go away in a timely fashion once spews moves me to Level 0? How angry should I be that I was sold tainted (albeit Level 2) addresses in the first place? Does anyone here think that it should be MY responsibility to "wait for enough time to pass by" to clear this up? I really like the Nocster service so far but I am dismayed that they would try and get me to think that this was normal and that I should somehow take this on the chin. Any input on BurstNET/Nocster and what I can expect from them would be appreciated. Sincerely (just trying not to go off the handle here), codesmack |

SPEWS is dead. At least according to the news. The close up of their shop has made a lot of e-mail servers go nuts. ISPs are removing the SPEWs listing from their system, but until then you will get bounced more than likely. Nocster is not the only company having problems.
"SPEWS.org - Spam Prevention Early Warning System [http://www.spews.org/] As of 8/26/2003, Osirusoft, distributer of the SPEWS and open relay blocklists, among others, is no longer operational. Servers using these lists (including the FTC) are currently rejecting ALL email. This shutdown seems to be in response to a several-week-long DDoS attack on Osirusoft, SPEWS and others, resulting in both sites being down. " Excerpt was from http://www.spamisbad.com/links.php |

Well, I only hope that I am the ONLY person is experiencing harddisk crashes with them and having long down time due to that...
I've had 3 harddisk crashes within 8 months. Losing data and Created a bad name for my business and clients walking away... How would someone who is experiencing this would react/behave?? |

downtime
By the way, I can see in your forum on your site that you are only talking about down time too. SO what do you mean?

Yes, I will not deny that they have problems staying up, but they still maintain a 99.5% uptime. There have been problems over the last half year, but our clients still stay with us because we have such a good support staff. The outages are not enough to effect our performance, although we would like to see these outtages stop all together.
It sounds like you got the lemon of the bunch, but it also sounds pretty strange that you have had to go through 3 harddisks. Maybe there is something you are putting on that keeps messing them up. It just sounds too weird. Downtime is one thing, but having problems with 3 hard disks is just rare. It is understandable that you will not praise their services. However these things happen with every other dedicated provider. I wish you good luck on your next server. |

crashes
Just thought I'd let you know:
I am also aware that these hardware problems occur in reality. What I don't and can't understand why should it take days to get a replacement? If I should have a harddisk crash here at home then I can get a replacement back up running within 24 hours. I have customers who want their site to be up as advertised 99.5% and they see this crashes as down time expecially if their sites are down for 8 days etc.etc.etc. My first crash was some time in May this year I was on a IDE server. I lost all clients data back then because I had no backup drive. This took about 10 days to be back up running. Then a few months later the same server harddisk crashed again. this took also about 8 days to get back up running. At the same time I have a scsi server since January 2003 runing but this scsi server was running as a slave machine so when the the ide machine fails, then goes the slave machine with it too. SO I moved all accounts from the ide machine over to the scsi machine and had the ide machine cancelled. Now I am on the scsi machine alone. I have I've had a seconf 73 GIG harddisk for backup purposes. Then about 5-6 weeks ago the scsi 73 GIG harddisk crashed. it took BurstNet about 7-8 days to get a temporary 36 GIG harddisk replaced. Now I am still currently waiting for a 73 GIG harddisk replacement. In the proces of all those 3 crashes I've lost 8 or 9 clients. A good support can't bring back downtimes which lead customers to leave your service. No matter how good my support is. that won't help them from even thinking about another service. That's my experience. All my customers have simple html files on their sites so there is nothing which is on it that can cause crashes. Besides, I have only a few clients left over now. all the rest of the accounts are my own. So I may have to close down my service in the near future and have my accounts hosted somewhere. I've paid until Jan. 2004 so after that time I'll see... But will make sure that it doen't fall under a BurstNet reseller I noticed that you are with Burstnet so I am sorry I would not have my account hosted by you under BurstNet. Mind you, I have nothing against you personally. its' just the web service down time. No hard fellings |

No hard feelings taken. I completely understand. If that was the type of service I was recieving I would leave them even before my time was up.
As for hosting with me hehe we have another server on servermatrix network. If you would like I can try to keep you updated on their services. At the least I'm sure I could host your sites for free.Msg me on ICQ: 60283286 -Brandon Last edited by RedDog : November 23rd, 2003 at 02:43 PM. |

new services
Well, I'll let you know more (if you want to know more?)
Thanks for your offer. I may approach you for services on your other servers. Are there any great deals on dedicated servers (a complete package including WHM and Cpanel and monitoring etc.etc.)? Thanks |

Oh I belive you, I"m not saying they're perfect, but you will find those problems wherever you go. The servermatrix is at The Planet. We're setting up a box right now, and they gave us a bad cpanel certificate already. They forgot to register the cpanel license. We've hosted with them all. You have to decide what is more important to you. The tech support, or the uptime. We have decided to go with the uptime and hope their services are good enough that we won't have to call on them often.

When we first signed up to BurstNet things were fine, but recently there have been problems. I wouldn't be surprised if in a couple months its some other company that is havin all these down times. I think people switch from BurstNet to other companies and fill them up....making BurstNet more reliable again and the otherones unstable.
