Calculating bandwidth?

When signing up for a hosting service there are usually packages with a set amount of bandwidth. How would you estimate how much bandwidth a site is going to need before you put it online? If you can estimate the number of hits and know the file size, how would you estimate the amount of bandwidth it would need? Does anyone know where to see stats that show how many hits other sites get and how much bandwidth they use (to compare)?

Thanks

Hi Matt,
Bandwidth is calculated multiplying the average page size of web site with the number of expected page views per month. For instance, if page size is 50k and it is assumed that 40,000 page views per month, then the required bandwidth is.05MB *40,000 =2 GB

Web hosts provide statistics program in their packages which would analyze the traffic of web site of the client.

Besides traffic your receive on your web site you should calculate how many e-mail messages are you going to send and receive. Some people send/receive a few MB of e-mail daily some don't.

If you use site monitoring toll it llso will take from your bandwidth. The same with search engine spiders.

Regards
D.
