How to change domain name?
I want to change my domain name to something completely different and I was curious how to do this to make sure that anyone accessing the site using the old domain will be automatically redirected to the same page they requested, but only they would get it with the new domain?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Brad Last edited by bradbrevet : July 7th, 2004 at 12:44 PM. |

are you using any type of control panel? If so look for a Redirect.

either way your going to need to keep your old domain name, so perhaps you can just make your index page for that domain a forward to the second.
But looking back at your question, this also pertains to a person who is picking out a specific page such as www.yourdomain1.com/folder/test.html, and your want them to go to www.yourdomain2.com/folder/test.html. The idea would still work, but does not work nearly as well as you would need the full structure of the site setup with forwards. in this case you would probably have to set up something with your domain provider, although I am not sure that it would direct them to the specific page so much as the main page of your new domain. |

It seems to me like I can just use a Parked Domain and gradually over time the new name will take precedence as long as that is what I use and set up a couple of redirects.
Does that sound correct, or am I missing something? I just thought it would be a little more complicated, but maybe not. Brad |

if your running a small site right now, then this really isn't a problem. A large site can get a little messy. |

How would it get messy, if you don't mind my asking?
Thanks for the help. |

Just a note that if google picks up on the other domain parked to the same site one or both sites can be banned from google.

that's an intersting bit of information. As for getting messy; to my thinking, if you want to direct to the same page off of the first domain, then you would need the have a parrallel structure of forward pages from the old domain. That isn't so bad for a small site, it's not even unmanagable for a large site at first really either, but what happens when your updating the site later, micht forget about on of the links in your old parrallel structure, or even if you don't it's one extra thing that you have to think about. That's pretty much all I'm saying. |
