Colocation vs Dedicated server hosting

Hi,
I am looking for a server hosting solution in USA
and I am kind of lost.

I was doing some research and found out that for decent dedicated serverI have to pay around $300/month -
it seemed to me kind of steep
considering e.g. that just for additional RAM I have to pay additional $50 - 100/month.
and I realize that companies use older servers for dedicated server hosting in $300/month price range.

I figured If buy my own server and let it colocate it would be financialy
paid off by 2-3 years and I would have more powerfull server and at the end server would be mine.

I was thinking getting my own server and do colocation.

The only problem is that I need somebody to completely manage my server, security patches, installs,...

Does anybody know about good managed colocation options?
Can you please help me make my decision - tell me some cons and pros of colocation.

Thank you.

There's an article on Pros and Cons of Collocation, it may help
http://datacenterdesign.blogspot.com/2006/10/pros-and-cons-of-data-center.html
Go for a host ooffering colo services in his own datacenter, check Serverpoint.com colo services, their dc is in Las Vegas.

managed colo is much more expensive than unmanaged colo. It's especially right when you colo 1 server only. I even know some managed colo vendors dont want to work with small customers.

If you still want managed colo, take a look at Datapipe. Usually I hear good things about them. Not sure if they take one server colo though.

Hostdime.com
Seems as good for dedicated servers as for collocation.

HqHost.net is good for co-location as they have their own datacenter in Chicago and New York and prices are not very expensive for this kind of web hosting services.

The thing is that in 2-3 years' time your fast and reliable servers might become quite obsolete and by renting a server from your provider you get a chance to avoid these extra expenses. I'm inclined to think that a dedicated solution is a better choice, you may look for a cluster solution if your need some extra reliability.
Check Rackspace.com, Fastservers.net, Webhostingbuzz.com and Ahosting.biz dedicated deals.

Thumbs down

Yes , colo server is more secure for your need. As you said , they may have using older server as dedicated server but I don't believe in the lack of efficiency of the older server.

I think , total cost will be same ,when you create a dedicated server or colo.

However, I would suggest you to prefer unmanaged colo.........

ServerPoint.com offers nice co-location services. They colocate the server in their state of the art, environmentally controlled server facility.

Serverpoint simple has own DC as othe 2 companies I have mentoied in the previous post here. That is very important for colocation.

First of all, you will need to justify what you are going to achieve by implementing either colocation or dedicated server. With colocation you will need to constantly keep your server up to date for the obvious security reasons. With colocation you will still need to pay for space plus data. With data, when your server is not properly patched or protected you will have to fork out a serious amount of money when the system is compromised. Believe me that hurts ...
At least with dedicated server you will have everything managed for you. With colocation, you will need to also protect your network with some form of firewall (linux or cisco) and IDS system. I for one would prefer colocation. If you have a decent size of customer base then colocation might be the way for you providing you are aware about the above considerations.

From the light of the above posts i think a dedicated server is enough for your needs. If you have dedicated server you can manage it independent. There will not be a problem when we compare it in to a colo.

well, if you have the time to do little programming research I would suggest colocating and managing yourself.

if you do not, then I would colocate and find a pro near you to help you manage it.

I would send you to a site that tells you step by step how to do it, but as a new user I am not allowed..so...

put this in your search engine and look at top result (not ad)
"how to build a webserver, colocate, and manage it" in google , with quotes, only one site will come up. There is also a forums about each step

by the way, the site is not a commercial site, not selling anything, and no ads..it is just a info site

The cost of an UBER server put together by you is around 1800. A cheap one that is still rocking is around 1000.

Both of these will be way better than your dedicated ones. And over the period of a few months you will be saving money versus paying a monthly fee.

Most 1u spots at a colo run around 100 a month.

A local pro to help you now and then and some books and you really will be happier.

most hosts are not good at anything...so you will be just as good or better.

These are the results of the search mentioned above
http://www.bobhoffman.com/test.html

But if your point isn't about learning things, the best is managed colo option, I'm staying with serverpoint, know they offer colo services with level one support.
