cpanel email: autorespond THEN discard?
In cPanel, can I autorespond to an email and then discard it? When I setup a discard filter, the autoresponder stops working. Basically, I want to discard emails sent to an address, but first autorespond to them to let the sender know the email is no longer valid.
Excuse my lack of experience in cPanel. ![]()

Why not just setup an autoresponder and then set your default to :blackhole:

If you set up an autoresponder for an address but do not have a mailbox set up for that address, then the mail will automatically be discarded after the autoresponder handles it. You don't even need to set your default to blackhole. At least that it how it works on my cpanel.

The email should drop into your default if your using cPanel.

Thanks for the suggestions. I am only reading your replies just now. I have already solved the problem on my own, so I will describe what I did (to compare and contrast to your solutions):
Basically, I forwarded all my email addresses to a new account and set my main account to bounce the emails with ":fail: no such address here". In more detail, here is exactly what I did: 1) Under "Mail", "Default Address" I set "matthewdoucette.com" to ":fail: no such address here" - This makes every email get discarded and bounced unless you do the next two steps. The bouncing is my autoresponder (as the reason I wanted an autoresponder was to give feedback to those still emailing an email I no longer use). 2) Under "Mail", "Add/Remove Accounts" I created a new account. - This new account will recieve all my mail (This will be accomplished in the next step, step #3). The main account still exists and will recieve no mail (this is already accomplished due to step #1). 3) Under "Mail", "Forwarders" I forwared all known email addresses under matthewdoucette.com to my new account created in step #2. - For example, if my new account was "test@matthewdoucette.com" and an email I use is "matt@matthewdoucette.com", then I forward "matt@matthewdoucette.com" to "test@matthewdoucette.com". Simple. Every email I do not forward to "test@matthewdoucette.com" get deleted AND bounced to the original sender. 4) Set my email program to check my new account, not my old one (which will forever be empty.) By the way, If I did not create a new account, and tried to do this with the original main account, it would not work. I'm not sure why as I don't follow the underlying logic. I think it is because of my step #1 (setting the default address to "fail: no such address here") which overrules and deletes all the emails forwarded in step #3.
