Does Privacy Stay with Domain Transfer?

Hi, I'm new and have been reading the board for a while. It's an amazing resource. I own a few domains and do some blogging and am thinking of expanding my content.

In that regard: I recently registered a domain via domains by proxy -- in other words, private registration.

1. If I transfer my domain to another host will the privacy continue?

2. If I keep the domain there but point nameservers to my hosting account with a different host, will the privacy remain?

Thanks for any help in answering this.

I would imagine your private registration remains intact since it's via domains by proxy. You should be able to login to domainsbyproxy and update any information you need. Where is your domain registered?

If you by "host" mean registrar, then you have no guarantee. What you should do is inform the new registrar that you don't want them to change contact information.

I think you should ask it from your registrar support

Q1. If I transfer my domain to another host will the privacy continue?

As Wuoshi says if you move the 'domain' to a new registrar you may find that some setting are changed, not always but it can happen.

Q2. If I keep the domain there but point nameservers to my hosting account with a different host, will the privacy remain?

You can change the nameservers as many times as you like, this will not affect the registrar details. Even if you have both domain registration and hostings with 'xyz' company and move the hostings (change the nameservers) to 'abc' company.

Hope this answers you questions. If you have any further questions please do come back and let us know.

As said by everybody else if you are transferring your domain to another registrar, there's no guarantee, you can contact your registrar to see if the privacy protection remains or not. And if you are changing your name servers I believe it has nothing to do with domain privacy, so the domain privacy remains.

And also domain privacy doesn't provide that much privacy. If someone tries to find your details I think it's possible.

The best thing to do is contact your registrar and find out whether privacy is intact after the transaction of a name.

When transferring the domain name, the privacy protect will need to be renewed as far as I know. Some domain registrars will need the privacy protect to be disabled before they can request the transfer.

The registrars I have experience with do not transfer "WhoIs privacy" as far as it is a separate service that each of them provides.

To answer your second question. Yes, if nameservers are changed the privacy settings should remain the same.

if youre going to transfer your domain from one registrar to another your privacy will be affected.
If youre only going to change nameservers privacy shouldnt be affected.

Anyways, ask for support at your registrar !

Good luck !

Migrating to a new registrar can affect you privacy. Change of nameservers wont cause an issue.
