heh...wanna free dedicted server?
I have just stumbled across a funky site wich claimed to give absolutely free dedicated hosting. Of cousrse there is a catch (2 of them):
1) you have big floating image on alll your pages (hmm.. wonder if I could fool that system) 2) you have to have 2000 views per month Those are two requrements to get free remote box with support. At least that is what those guys claim to provider. There are numbers too, the best one
And yeah, they dont care about content of your site....

Total scam. Search for it on webhostingtalk.com and freewebspace.net. I do not know anyone who has ever gotten one of used one.

hey, I never said one should even consider them as a host. Its too much for homepage and to little for so-so site that gets 2k views. The only reason I posted them here is for fun of it.

Yeah, I found them a year or so ago and liked them but same here, I don't have a page that brings in that many hits. Another thing that turned me away is the ad you have to put on your page. It's a javscript ad that's like 50x50 pixels and it bounces around the screen in front of all your content.

The best way to get *free* dedicated hosting (assuming you have a dedicated Cable or DSL connection) is to host it yourself. Most Cable and DSL companies will provide you with a static IP Address for a nominal fee (usually in the $2 - $5 range). Call your provider to see what they offer.

Have you ever thought what a slow site you'll get hosting it off a cable modem? My cable gives only 45kbytes up (~250 down), and I do not think 40kbytes is enough to host a site.

For a little bit more money a month, my provider gives me 1mb downstream and 256mb (Edit: 256kb) upstream. I'm sure that would make a difference though. As I said before, check with your provider before you setup your own server.

First of all, are you talking mbytes or mbits? If mbits, okie, I can believe in 1mb because I have 1.7mbits downstream right now, even if 1mbyte, I can handle since it could be ~6 t1. Which is little too expensive. BUT. 256mb(its|ytes) upstream??? I mean no offence, but are you drunk or something? 256mbits is..uhm... about 2 dedicated oc-3* 256mbytes means...means... it means you're providing connection for level7 and quest put together at the same time. The best guess for price for 256mbytes (not counting hardware)... uhm... I doubt we are still talking 5** digits, more like 6 Still think you can get that from your provider? Call them again, and make sure you don't dial sci-fi channel number this time... *Dont even get me started on how dificult it is to get oc3 from provider. Almost impossible (and it is in many parts of usa) **Do the math, ~100k*8=~800k but since price grows expotensionally, you can add few huns to that... |

No reason to rant over a TYPO. Geez...I meant to say 256kb. Why write several paragraphs and confuse yourself with math over a mistake? perhaps you should seek some help.

typo huh? Difference is like between haven and hell.
>>Why write several paragraphs and confuse yourself with math over a mistake? Because. First of all I did not confuse myself with math, and if math confuses you, sorry for bringing it up. Another reason would be to point out HOW wrong were you. Hopefully you got that you were wrong BY A LOT. And for now I will ignore you last sentence, g*d d**n all n00bz |

Al,
I'll have to go with the newbie here. I'm sure you were aware that 256mb was a typo and he meant 256Kb. Which means you just went off on a rant for the fun of it, or because you had a bad day. If you just wanted to point out that he made a mistake and didn't want any less astute readers to misunderstand, you simple could have written: Quote:

rod, I see where you're coming from, but I hope you will see my point from here

First of all, besides all things, I am a great fan of math - especially all real-life problems calculus level and beyond. I do not like confusing myself with anything, muchless with math. Then, how was I supposed to know that 'mb' was a mistake? I have seen much more ignorant posts on devshed, and guys were 100% sure they know what they were talking about. Also, why he did not (and still hasn't) tell me what he was talking in, kilobits or kilobytes? kbytes are common online, whereas kbits used by isp's to impress people and in order to confuse them showing 8 times actuall speed (they do sound alike after all). Of course, the last drop was his very last sentense. I hope, rod, you know better I am not the first person on this forum to attack new guys, but this one was just over his head suggesting Quote:
I agree, thats not my best day, but that had nothing to do with the way I reacted to his suggestion, which basicly was to 'find some mental help' I do not think most members of this board would agree with him. Well may be few ![]() Last edited by AlCapone : December 20th, 2001 at 03:56 PM. |

Al,
That remark from him came after you posted: Quote:
Which was totally uncalled for. Quote:
Logic? Seriously, you had one of two options: 1) it was a simple typo, 2) he was ignorant Why'd you have to choose option 2? Before jumping down someone's throat maybe you should seek clarification. If you must go around ASSuming the worst then BE VERY, VERY CAREFUL what YOU post. You'll get back exactly what you give.... |
