Hey, i've had a website before hosted by some company, and can make my own webpages thats all good, but i would like to know how to get a domain name FROM THE SOURCE, thats without any company owning me and no monthly fees, i'd also like to serve it off my computer... I know it's possible, because the name i want is still completely up for grabs. and if it isn't possible to just grab a domain name for free then who are the companies paying fees to?

You can get a free uni.cc domain and their service will allow you to set the A record only which can be pointed to your computer's IP. The problem will be if you don't have a static IP then you will run into problems. Also, many ISP's specifically do not allow hosting off of their networks and if they do a scan and find you hosting then they will terminate your internet account.

It is not possible to get free domain name and it is also not good idea to host the site from your computer. There are lot of free host you can get free hosting and point your domain to them

I don't know whats wrong with hosting a site from your computer? I did it for a long time and plan to do it again.

you will never be able to own a domain name, you are only avaliable to lease them. <Edited> Their is no "source" when it comes to buying domains. We all have to go to the same organization which does not sell domains directly.
