Yeah.. but who's dumb enough to run a FTP server off a windoze desktop? Who's dumb enough to run a website off a windoze desktop?

![]() ![]() ![]() That wasn't very nice! Still... it's gotta be better than using IIS or PWS... I mean... Micro$oft BUILT problems into them... that means unless you're TRYING to put flaws in the product.. you can't outdo M$ blundering! I guess if you're going to run a website off a Windows PC... no reason not to use this... but it's generally not reccomended that you do that no matter WHAT server you use folks. |

Ya. And $49 really isn't that bad. The setup is *hopefully* easier than Apache + [Some FTP Server] + Active State Perl would be.
I don't know that the market is very big for this, though. Low budget webmaster not willing to put the time in to setup something that's free? Maybe, I don't know... |

Easy or not, hosting off a Windows desktop is infinitely stupid. The Windoze desktop security philosophy goes something like this:
1. There isn't any. 2. SHHH! Not so loud! If noone hears you maybe noone will notice! 3. Well.. you can password protect your screen saver... Despite Apache's recent stumble (which, of course, was patched VERY quickly - unlike what happens with IIS), it's still a very secure server (when properly configured) if it's run off a properly set up *nix box. However, the second you plop Apache down on Windoze - that security goes straight out the window because of Windoze's utter lack of the aforementioned umm "commodity" (see the post about M$ charging for their security (dis)services in the Lounge). Bad idea. BTW.. you have to pay for IIS. I don't know if you've ever tried to set up an IIS server, but trying to get it working properly can be pure hell under less then perfect conditions. Upgrading can be nearly impossible sometimes. I find Apache MUCH easier due solely to the comprehensive documentation and help network available in the Open Source Community. The second you hit a snag with IIS, you are totally ........[self-censor] well... not in good shape. Trying to get tech support from Micro$oft is slow, painful, and expensive in the best of cases.
