Ok, install Windows XP if you haven't already.
Now install Apache, then PHP, then MySQL, then if you want you can install ASP and PERL.
Now you need to download a mail server from somewhere and install that, search on google for one.
Now you need a control panel. Search for "free windows hosting control panel" on google but I doubt you'll find a good one, if you're willing to pay a lot go with Ensim or Helm.
Now you need to set up the nameservers with your IP, then you need to set the domain's nameservers to what you just made.
Now go into your control panel and setup an account for your website.
Oh I forgot about the connection, a big connection is recommended.
Or if you didn't want to do all that you could just go with buying hosting off someone, it'll work out a hell of a lot cheaper.

You forgot to add prey that your ISP doesn't fine you for hosting when it's not allowed in there TOS.

Oh yeh, or even better signup with Sprint or Cogent or one of the main bandwidth carriers and get a direct line to them, then you never have to bother with an ISP.

I would recommend you look at a different OS then the resource hog Windows.

Novell’s Suse is easy to use, and comes with an auto install for MySQL, PHP, Apache and many more services. Though before you look at anything of this sort, you will need to get familiar with Unix based operation systems. It sounds scary, but it’s really not all that hard, and you learn things that you can apply to future activities.

I donno, if I were you (and i was in your position at one point) I would just buy hosting. Trust me, what your trying to do is extremely hard, problematic, and expensive. Though it doesn't seem like that at first, it is. But if you still want to go for it, good luck to you and let me know how it goes!

Hey,
Not only will they not allow it, but port 80 might be blocked off completely. I know it is with my ISP, but you might consider doing colocation instead.

I tried hosting on my ISP for a basic website, and not even that worked. (long before WebsiteUnited was born)

Anyway, goodluck with this. If that doesn't work, then put it on port 81 Control Panels are helpful, also.

You need a new ISP None of our ISP's (DSL & Cable) block port 80. Only port 25.

True, but we are looking for simple solutions, red hat can get messy, especially when it comes to configurations, though so does most other Unix bases, but some make it a bit more simple (wizards, auto-install scripts, ect..)

I would recommend you look at a cheap reseller account as it will make your life much easier.

* Also thanks for the welcome!

Um... There are some "All-in-one" Ready to Go packages available on SourceForge website... you can try that http://sourceforge.net/softwaremap/trove_list.php?form_cat=250

(SorceForge) is a place where.... you find free opensource stuff

I don't understand why one would want to host their site out of their home. Is there some advantage to this? I can't imagine that there's any money to save. Am I missing something?
