This is going to sound like a real noob question but im just really lost. I want to create my own site from scratch. I have purchased a domain name from a registrar, however not from a site that offers web hosting like lunarpages or go daddy. I want to do it my self and be my own host. So besides buying the domain name for the website and using DNS servers that I am using from another site, what do I need? I am using my computer as the server and have Apache installed. I have a broadband internet connection with comcast and I leave my computer on all the time. How can I start adding pages and things like that to my domain name? Apache works great with my computer but how do I configure it to work along with my site? If anyone could help that would be great!

Well before you try to do that read your TOS form comcast. I do believe that it states that you cant run servers on the network. You are better off getting shared hosting.

put our files in the htdocs directory and you will be able to read your "site". if you would like to host different domain names look at this page http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/vhosts/ You should also read the documentation from apache about the server at http://httpd.apache.org/docs/ good luck with your server.

i would seriouosly checkout the TOS of your ISP, most do not allow you to run severs on a home connection, i used to test servers at home before sending to the datacentre, until i got stung and lost my dsl connection when the isp caught on, if u need hosting and want to run it yourself, get a barebones vps, far better option

Home connection demands much resources and it's not cheap at all.

You probably shouldn't host a website off a cable modem... especially not on comcast with their traffic shaping. Get a shared hosting account from one of the companies you mentioned, you'll be a lot happier over time. |
