Hi,
You need to find a free dynamic dns service. |

Cable providers, from what I understand, are not too friendly towards people who try to host sites off their cable connections. Also, I believe cable providers tend to cripple the upload speed to prevent this sort of thing. Cable is definitely not the optimal connection for hosting a site.
Your best bet for hosting a site is to simply go purchase an account with a hosting provider. What sort of site is it? Big, small, you expect heavy traffic, not so heavy traffic? |

Lol, yeah....I put that page up because of the fact that I haven't had much time to work on the site lately.
This is because of the fact that I just got a job at Office Max. ![]() Btw, did it load pretty fast? ![]() |

http://www.dslwebserver.com/main/fr...troduction.html Give that a shot. It also says it covers the problem of having a dynamic IP, but I didn't read it. If you find it helpful, please post back and let us know so other people who may have the same question can benefit from it. Hmmm, I've talked to a lot of people that've griped about the limitations their cable providers slapped them with, but maybe that was just their providers. Joe - The placeholder? Oh yeah, that loads REALLY fast! (j/k) Yeah, I'm stuck on a dial up and once I clicked through to the actual site it popped right up after a few seconds - about as fast as DevShed does. |

FYI -
I had a nice conversation with my uncle over the weekend and one of the topics that came up was Comcast cable. They DO NOT allow you to run your own server(s)... Joe - I would strongly suggest you don't get caught because they'll bump you off the cable. They won't charge you any extra for bandwidth or anything like that (can't.. it's not in your contract), but they'll still drop your service. You'll probably be OK though as long your site doesn't start getting a ton of hits. |

I run a really small server on a Windows XP machine... Using Apache, on an ADSL(Dynamic, DHCP Protocol) line... (Only for development)
I've never had a problem with my ISP, But I have had problems with the upload speed... I would suggest find a good Internet Accelerator. I use Accelerate2K2, But I'm on windows.... So I guess you might have some problems finding one for Linux. Personally I think Linux is WAY better, I just haven't gotten around to buying a new machine... Like why use Linux on a crummy machine? lol(A scilent way of bashing M$)

Lavcube -
I don't know about ADSL, but Cable connections aren't really "always on" (at least not with Comcast). If you let it sit long enough it will disconnect itself from the server. When it reconnects, it will want to go out to a server and get a script to tell it what to do. Funny thing is, this script also includes the "cap" on upload speeds. With a little ingenuity and some elbow grease, you can actually redirect your cable connection to your OWN server when it reconnects and have it pull a script off that instead... with the annoying cap conveniently removed of course... again, I don't know about ADSL, but you can do that with Comcast Cable. I don't know how, but I DO know someone who set it up, so it's possible. A little test of skills perhaps? |

ADSL is nothing like Cable... And yes, I too know someone that has "uncapped" cable, I don't like Cable because most of the companies that sell it, put too many restrictions and stuff on it, So I try to aviod using Cable.
About the Cable disconnecting, Just get a dynamic dns program that has support to send out HTTP 1.1 requests for keepalive. I use DirectUpdate for windows. And it's never failed for me, I have the keepalive on just in case. I'm getting a new Dedicated 10mbps Fibre connection, And I'm setting up a new 1.53 GHZ, 2GB RAM, 2-120 GB HDD's(Western Digital), 100 Minute UPS. Running RedHat Linux 8.0, And I'm gonna be doing hosting for some people in town here.. Once I generate enough money, I'm thinking about doing "Virtual" hosting. Joe -
If you're not getting a great deal of hits you'll probably be OK. Of course, you can get meager hosting for $5 a month, so why bother risking your cable connection? After all, if Comcast scans you for open ports, you're screwed (port 80 and 8080 will be open), because they frown on open ports as well. Lavacube - Ayup, I didn't think ADSL was the same, didn't know about the script / always on situation though. If I get cable someday the first thing I'll do it yank the cap.. that would drive me nuts. Whoever - Speaking of ports... I did a default Redhat 8.0 install, and before I could get the firewall set up I got a connection on port 23! Yea... inherent security... riiiighhhtttt. That's why telnet was accepting connections ![]() |
