Honestly, I remember throught a mailing that Coavad ([url]http://www.covad.com[/ruk]) it was about $1500 per month. I am on DSL and considering one too, but its a bit too pricey. The prices should decrease in a few months.

Here in Raleigh, NC it's $1200.00/mo. But, get DSL/Cable if you're just using it as a web client. I have cable at home and for $40.00/mo., I get almost the same download speeds...

It all depends on where you live. T1 here in Seattle, WA is $365/mo. unlimited transfer.

What company in seattle? I am starting a company and was looking for an alternative (DSl) but this may suffice.

I got a quote on a DS-1 from InfoHighway in Houston for around $300-$400 / month.
They said it was because I was really close to the local telco office. Zebbx |

There are two charges for a T. The telco and the upstream. Each is about $400. But it depends entirely on your distance from your provider.
The way we do it is we measure your distance by using the your exchange. Then we plug it into our computers and it spits out the milage and price. A zero mile T is about $325 and a $25 mile T is about $1000. Then you will need a CSU/DSU, Firewall and a Cisco Router. This will cost you some serious cash. |

why do you say you need a CSU/DSU, firewall, and cisco router, wouldn't the firewall come as software for the router?

Reply to zog908 :
You can do it all in a cisco router(DSU, routing, and firewall). The firewall software for the cisco routers is pricey depending on the model. If you were starting out, and assuming you were going to use a T-1, then I would get a 1720 or 2610 with wic-1dsu-t1 card w/ IP software and then purchase a small(10 user) ICSA-certified firewall such as a Netscreen-5(suggested retail is $495) and also a switch or hub. This would be a good little startup kit. Later, Rob |

Cable Modem Issues
To reply to an earlier statement about Cable Speeds...
There is no set speed. You are put in a pool with a bunch of other people. That pool has a limited amount of bandwidth. If you are the only one online, in theory, you could get all of it. If everyone is online, you might only be able to get a 10KB/s download... DSL is a dedicated (and sometimes guaranteed) bandwidth. In my experience you'll get a higher speed/dollar average with Cable (depending on where you live), but you'll need to suffer through some slow times to do it. Just thought I'd share. -Pete |

I'd be interested to know ... a step-up from cable & dsl is optical fibers (T1, etc). Does anybody have some insight on setting up such a connection (or link to a site) and the associated fees?
