How to run a server in my house?
Hello,
I have to do something that will sound impossible to most people. I need to setup a computer to host a website in my house that will be able to handle heavy traffic, about 1300 people per day, all in 3 weeks. Here’s the problem: I don’t have a server I don’t have an Internet connection (I’ll need at least a T1 {1.544 MBPS}) I don’t have software to run the server I do know that I will need a dedicated IP address or static IP address, right? And I think there is this thing called DNS settings? And of course I will need a domain registered Other than that I don’t know very much and I don’t know what else I need, or what I need to do. The only good news is that I basically have an unlimited budget for this. (Around $50,000) If any one can provide any help I would be very grateful. Thanks Last edited by buzboy12345 : January 28th, 2003 at 08:07 PM. |

ha! Forget it. Last time I checked T1 was about 800/mo - for that price you can find some really nice colo deals. So here's my advice - get a fine server and drop it off in the closest datacenter. Don't even think about running anything semi important from home.

This is going to sound incredibly rude:
You don't sound like you know what you've gotten yourself into. How'd you get yourself into it? And WHY do you need to have your own server? It's expensive, time-consuming, and usually not much worth the effort. Running a small time server off a cable connection is one thing - running a full-fledged dedicated web server with (moderately) heavy traffic is a big job. Do you know Apache inside and out? Do you know *nix inside and out? Do you know database systems inside and out? And the clincher: Do you know SECURITY inside and out? A big budget does not a stable server make. What are you planning to do with it? |

I wish I lived where ctb's reply is considered to be 'rude'
By my standards it's almost a praise ![]() |

I wish i had $50,000 for something i've no clue about. as for t1 you can get it as low as $400, if you live close to your isp

What I want to know, is why, if someone had a $50,000 budget they wouldn't just throw down $199-$299/month for a P4 60GB dedicated server on an 0C-12 or OC-48 line in a top-of-the-line data center. It sounds like a nice suicide attempt to throw somebody's $50k down the drain by sticking a production grade server in your own basement!!

ick... what in the hell possessed you to post that completely unrelated rubbish right in the middle of someone else's thread? If you're going to post to a thread, ask youself a question first: What will this post make me look like? If the answer is "a really big dumbass" - strongly consider NOT posting in the thread.

he promotes his GIFs that way. the file was download 1492 times, that's hard to believe.

Well, actually for $300 you'd be really really lucky to get reliable oc3. And for anything like oc48 you'd have to probably deal directly with uunet. |

Well, either way the dumb-a** shouldn't be sticking a server in his basement if he's trying to produce $50,000 worth of results and service!
