How to setup a commercial hosting server

Hey all,

I have a spare server that I want to setup as a hosting server for our clients that don't want a template service.

I'm going to support my local sys admin community and hire someone to set it up.

So I can be educated I'm looking for a document(s) that talk about the issues and maybe even a checklist or procedure on how to set it up and what kind of tests to run to make sure it's secure.

If anyone knows where to get such information I'd appreciate you posting it.

I know I could go to all the different sites (apache, php, postgresql, linux, etc.) but I'm really looking for a single-source for the info.

Thanks!

Hi kawika,
I'm not sure that such a document exists. Each one of those topics you mentioned have thousands (in the case of linux millions) of pages of different documentation. I couldn't imagine somebody combining them all into one place.

I would suggest you make a checklist of the options you want your server to have. Then, research these packages and figure out if you really want them or not. Then you can select a linux distribution, install it, and begin configuring your server. If you're looking for an easy to manage front end, you might look at CPanel, Plesk, Ensim, or another 'Control Panel' software which automates most tasks.

Since it sounds like you have other Linux servers at your disposal, you could also poke around at those systems and figure out how they work.

Good luck
