I have to reply to mei-chan's post recommending a hosting company. First of all, it is a common practice for employees or friends of the principals of a hosting company to submit glowing reports about a company as though they were merely a customer. I don't know that this is true in mei-chan's case, but I do see that she is listed as a moderator at the forums on the site for the hosting company she is recommending. (I am guessing "she" since the domain name miyechi.com is registered to Julie Bai)
Other issues of concern: no physical address or phone number at the site; the phone number given at the time the domain name infodama was registered has been disconnected; the owner of the site lists a hotmail email address; form the date of the domain name registration and the lack of posts at the company's forum it would seem that they have not been in business long. Now, of course, each of these points could have a logical explanation. However, the "nightmare that is hosting" out there requires all of us to be extremely cautious. Hosting is obviously a cash cow and relatively easy to get into. I talk to 100's of people every month with disaster stories about hosting. Using a forum like this for a misleading and disguised commercial pitch is doing the entire community an enormous disservice, imho. Mike |

Hello.
Thanks for your note. While the email in our domain whois info corresponds to my personal @hotmail address since I manage the domain info, it is valid and is the same as putting my own winnie@infodoma.com email address. As for the telephone number, thanks for notifying, we have had clients telling us this before also. But since we don't yet offer telephone support, I hadn't updated it. We will be updating the phone number soon on the Whois, although it won't be the support number since we don't have a time frame yet when we can offer telephone based support. We have plans for it, but we don't have an exact time frame for its deployment yet. If you will do a reverse look up on the disconnected phone number, which I am not sure can be done though, it will point to my name listed on the whois info. ![]() Even then, the phone number listed on the whois info will be updated soon to reflect a new phone contact. When we do provide telephone support, we will notify all our current clients about it and also post it in the support section of our website. I will be updating it shortly in the whois info. ![]() For the forums, we have just started with them and made them public for customers and non-customers alike [less than a month since the forums have been open to the public, before we only used experimental yabbse]. As for posts about us on our forums, like I said they are new. If you would like I can give you the url for some of our customers [with their permission] so you can contact them and find out how they feel about our service. Hopefully that can clarify some questions. ![]() As for customer comments, we cannot restrict customer comments as long as they don't state something that we don't currently offer or support. Also, from time to time, as our current clients were notified when the forums went live, we will choose a customer to be a moderator on our forums, and miyechi.com was chosen to be one of those moderators. Hopefully that clarifies your questions, and sorry for any confusions this may have caused. Thanks again for pointing out about the phone number. If you have any more questions please don't hesitate to post here or contact me directly at winnie@infodoma.com Thanks. Regards. |

my apologies
Hi Mei-chan and Winnie,
Well, well don't I feel like the crabby old man this morning. My apologies for being so critical. Mei-chan I'm old enough to be your grandfather. Your site is great, a lot of fun, and I admire you for taking on the moderator task. Sometimes I guess you have to put up with the old folks' crabbiness. We have to put up with all of these aches and pains you know and it makes us a little short tempered sometimes.... ;-) Mike Last edited by mberst : February 9th, 2002 at 12:48 PM. |

no, good call mberst. it's always good to be skeptical when it's so easy for the supplier to cheat and so hard on the customer if they do. You always have to be on the lookout for places like http://forums.devshed.com/showthrea...0000&forumid=12 .
It's still nice to hear that there's a perfectly good explanation. I'd be more interested, but I'm quite happy with http://www.phpwebhosting.com/ right now, though I have hardly anything on my site at the moment. -wg <>< |
