If ISP doesn't allow web servers
My ISP wont' let me run any web servers, rip off! Are there any alternatives?
Also if you someone could tell me the real reason they won't let you do it. |

Erm, you could try to tun it on some high port and hope they don't check all of them. Also you could ask around how strict they are with their rules, for example time warner usually lets you host all you want, even though aup says you can't.
They do it because they don't like people utulizing 100% of bandwidth because they quite simply cannot provide it. Alternatives are to get a hosting company or use somebody else's box.

I have roadrunner, is it the only one time warner has? Cause i think they own lots of companies

IIRC, road runner doesn't mean time warner - TW is pretty much on south-east but someone else takes over in northern part.
But if you're in florida - be cool. It is TW and they don't give a damn thing, so run all you want. Even if they will go nuts and bust ya, they will have to give you one warning before disconnecting. |

Get around what? They don't block ports, so nothing really prevents you from running apache or whatever you got.

I'm a complete newbie in that. What i meant was when i type the IP they given me it just shows "can't find server page" instead of the index page. It did work when i had compuserve dial up.

uhuh... make sure it's not a lan ip (eg doesn't start with 10, 192.168 and whats-the-third-one). What happens when you try to telnet to your ip, or ping it or connect thru ftp or any other services?
BTW, I reckon this should be a good time to start another thread. (7th for you in just one day :cool ![]() |

haha it works! I prolly made a silly newbie mistake in the beginning. i had two ips back then, one for cable and one for dial up.
Thanks a lot ![]() |

You're welcome. Now all you need is register a domain name for under 10 bucks a year, find free name server which you can use and you'll have www.wannabeme.com or something like that.
Problem with just using ip is the fact that TW does change them when they feel like. AFAIK, your 'static' IP with time warner changes roughly once every two weeks. If you have a domain name and little app which will update NS records say every 12 hours, then people will be able to reach you even when your ip changes. |

For you it's a little app. For me it's learning a whole new set of things i've had no idea existed. Thanks for taking time to help me. |

Not everything has to be written by yourself, sometimes it's just easier to use pre-made packages. http://www.everydns.net/ is one of those packages - you register domain name (elsewhere), use their name servers (for free), download app which updates their records every so often and you're all set. Eveything is free (besides domain name)
