Is it possible to host JSP application without a static IP?
Hi all,
I do not have a static IP address, but I wish to host a JSP application on my WIN2K server. Is it possible to host a web application (JSP in this case) without a static IP address? |

Not that i`m aware off. Sometimes ISPs give you a dynamic IP address, but when the lease ends with their DHCP server, it is renewed again with the same IP. This tends to be more with cable networks, however. Does your IP address change each time your internet dials down?

Can you tell me briefly about the "DHCP Server"? Do you mean that cable modem changes IP address less often than dial-up (e.g. ADSL) ?
Currently, my ip usually change after I disconnection/reconnection. |

OK I have Blueyonder Broadband, which uses a cable modem. When the modem is first switched on it gets whats known as a lease from the DHCP server back at the ISP. If you do ipconfig /all form a command prompt you`ll see this. It also gives you the date that the lease was given, and when it will expire. Generally, the DHCP will renew the leases before the lease expires. When it is renewed, the IP is released from your machine (the MAC address), and is put back into the IP address pool on the DHCP server. For some weird reason, with Blueyonder, the lease is renewed with the same IP address, thus simulating a static IP address. I have had the same IP address since I had broadband installed and that was last August. This is perhaps a cheaper alternative to buying a static IP address.
I have noticed, however, that people on ISPs like Freeserve, and AOL, tend to have the IP renewed either everytime the lease expires, or when they disconnect / reconnect. 2 solutions then - Get an ISP that has a simulated static IP address like Blueyonder, or buy a static IP address from your ISP. Please note: I don`t believe that you will get the "simulated" static IP Address from the dial-up service from blueyonder. I believe you only get it from a broadband account. If this fails, I run a hosting company, and we could give you space on our server, say 200MB with 4GB bandwidth per month for £4.99 a month. This may be cheaper than the static IP - We could also lower this price, for example, with less webspace, or less bandwidth, to suit your needs. If you want more info, email me on dan.b@galorewebservices.com and I`d be pleased to help. |
