    Multiple sites on the same hosting account

    Hello, I would like to host more then one site on the same hosting account however I do not know what is the best way to organise these sites. My hosting service does allow me to host more then one site on the same account.

    Now, when I bought the hosting service I had to define my primary domain (ex: mydomain.com). This points to the root (/). Then I created a subdomain (ex: subdomain1.mydomain.com) which points to /subdomain1. I then created another subdomain (ex: subdomain2.mydomain.com) which points to /subdomain2.

    Now I want Joomla installed for mydomain.com, subdomain1.mydomain.com and subdomain2.mydomain.com. With my current structure everything works great. However my problem is that in the root directory (/) I have both Joomla files and folders and also the directories for my other two sites.

    I am afraid that if I update Joomla (or maybe I do something stupid) for mydomain, I could finish erasing the directories for my other two websites. Therefore I was wondering; is it possible to organise my websites as following;

    /mysite
    /subdomain1
    /subdomain2

    while still be able to access mysite with http://mydomain.com (and not http://mydomain.com/mysite). I am asking this because when I create a subdomain the hosting provider allows me to point this to a directory. However for the primary domain (mydomain.com) the hosting provider does not allow me to so.

    Therefore I am afraid that with the above structure I would only be able to access mysite for the primary domain by writing http://mydomain.com/mysite while I would like to access mysite using the url http://mydomain.com

    Any ideas?

    If I am not mistaken, that would be a matter of DNS pointing which shouldn't be an issue, but I would check with your host to make sure, I know that the host I use has a Domain Name Pointer tool within the administration control panel, plus, and this is of course obvious, but just be sure to backup the other 2 directories/sites (download to local computer/drive) before making any other changes. In fact, I have my host do an automatic backup every week or so, so that if anything goes wrong I can at least just jump back to last weeks backup and be fine. Sorry for the lengthy reply and I am about to sign off for the night in about 20 mins, but please let me know if this was what you were looking for or if I misunderstood. Good luck, Earl.

    .htaccess is your best friend, go read some tutorials by doing a quick google search and you can accomplish exactly that!
