Need advice on dedicated host.

Hello folks, I'm new to this place. Mostly posting in Perl forum, but need an advice on what should I get.

I dont even know if I need an dedicated host right away.

Basicly I do web development (and design) and would like to start a full service and include a hosting in a package.

I have few websites wich arent geting to much traffic. Actualy you can say it's very small amount, but I plan to start few of my own websites wich will have biger targeted audience (ones curently running are local - Serbia only).

So I think that virtual private host should be enough. But then there is an prospect of generating more traffic in near future. And switching many sites from VPH to a dedicated only isnt going to pass smoth.

What do you think folks ? Any sugestion about provider ?
Offcourse I want that it's cheap, but quality matters more.

Also that they are not mentioned anywhere in the whole thing. So that I have my own dns and everything.

Thanks.

maybe you should partner up with a webhost and they will provide you with some hosting till you get to the stage that you can run it yourself. That way you can provide services to your clients without having to provide additional support etc. That would be cheapest method.

Alternatively you could go for a semi-dedicated option and share a server with someone which would be a bit cheaper. If you are interested in either i can help you out with this.

I would suggest going with a reseller account over a VPS. Gives you complete control of your accounts and allows you to hide your host (in most cases). Plus a VPS/Dedicated server would probably be a waste of money if your not going to have much usage.

yea VPS generally cost more so a reseller would be a good alternative.

VPS gives you complete control over the enviroment and you are not at the mercy of your host for how you want to set them.

As I found on. The best deal would be VDS. As Virtual Dedicated server. Same thing as VPS, but resource are realy shared among users of the server. And one canot overtake whole CPU or take up whole internet connection with his traffic.

I've been also looking at the Ipowerweb. Dont know what's the catch.
They have dedicated hosting for $50/month ?!?

Hey monsterhosting. I checked your site

I will need mod_perl and ability to put those scripts
outside cgi-bin.

Mod_perl needs to be installed, but the second thing can esily be seted trougth Apache's config file.

Also if I latter want to upgrade my account. Say to a higer membership.
What happends then ?

And and what about that RAM. You say minimum 128 Mb and max 1 GB ?!?
So what it will be ? Guess 128 MB

Your price of : $39.95/month realy got me interested.

Yeah. As it apears, the best solution would be some of the EV1 dedicated ones.

Good/bad things about them ?

Also, what about CPU power. How much is it realy needed ? There are some cheaper dedicated hosts (many places on the internet) that have say P III 1 Ghz 512 MB Ram,Celeron 1,7 Ghz 512 MB Ram, Duron 1700+ also 512 MB Ram ...etc.

Dont know how much traffic they can handle ?

technod,

Thanks for checking out our site to answer your questions:

You can install any Mod you want inside the VPS for your needs. That's the beauty of a VPS.

You can upgrade at any time and we just add the space to your current package.

No you are always guaranteed to have 128 MB of RAM but if no RAM is being used then it can burst up to 1 GB.

If you have any other questions it's best to contact me at gjones@monsterhosting.ca.

Aha I get it about the RAM. I tougth that whole server has that much RAM. This way, no one can 'suck up' all the memory ... nice feature.

Only thing I dont like is bandwith.

And for a little more than 2x $ ($99) on EV1 I get 1000 GB of monthly transffer. And yes a little older computer (P III), but dont have 5 - 10 more people on it.

I say 10 more people since 128 MB x 10 is a little more than 1 GB.

Plan is to put a lot of TGP galleries, and free sites (4 pages, two galleries) that make alot of traffic. Basicly on bandwith you give, I can put only my sites, and canot resell anything. So in that case I can get plain hosting that will for less money give same bandwith.

Or even get a 2 year hosting on maxipoint for $50 each month (get one more hosting account each month with domain included). Wich has only 20 MB of space, but unlimited traffic ... perfect to put ~ 200 images (100 KB each) wich make almost 10 fre sites and 20 galleries ...
