Pointing one or more domains to same server?

I have a client who's domain and hosting is done with another "local" company. This company hosts the website on a server which does have a public IP. However I noticed that when I enter http://myclientdomain.com and then view source; the source has a frame tag which loads the website from http://localcompanydomain.com/hosting/myclientname/

Everything works fine on the website. However in my opinion this creates some problems in terms of SEO. Additionally I have some problems connecting to some social network services since these expect requests to come from http://myclientdomain.com rather then from http://localcompanydomain.com/

Therefore I was wondering; is it possible for this guy to point http://myclientdomain.com to the correct directory on his machine? rather then having it pointing to his domain?

He said he can remove the masking but that will make the site only accessible from http://localcompanydomain.com/hosting/myclientname/ which is not acceptable.

Also I cannot just drop the hosting. I did not do the agreements with this company and do not want to be seen as if trying to steal the hosting agreement (I provide hosting for my clients but do not have a physical server).

Yes, in fact it's practically trivial to do that. If he tells you he can't do it, he's either lying or incompetent - neither are good qualities for a web host. I highly recommend that you tell your client to demand that the host fix the server configuration or else move them to a better host. If you don't want to be seen as stealing the hosting agreement then don't host them yourself, go with a third party. Any $5/mo hosting company is going to provide better service than that.

Hello again,

I sent a quick email to my domain registrar to ask them how to point a domain to a 3rd party hosting account. They sent back and told me how to edit the IP Address in the Zone File. I went on to check some of my domains and indeed the IP Address in the Zone File is the same as the one I have in my Hosting account.

Now my question is this; The IP Address points to a machine NOT TO A DIRECTORY. When I add a hosting for a domain I also define the sub-folder where the files for that domain will be placed. For example, if I have the domain myclient.com, I create a sub-folder under root named myclient and I point myclient.com to /myclient

From the Zone File the domain is pointing the hosting machine. Therefore, who (or what or where) is the addressing to /myclient directory being made? Is this something that gets configured on the host machine? Some file or database record?

Mapping a domain to a directory is handled by your web server software on the web server machine.

Thanks, that is important information for at this point. I'm pretty sure that this person might not know how to do this type of mapping. I think if is using IIS for hosting then such setting swould have to be configured in IIS itself. Thanks again for the info. I will search in that direction. Thanks for all the help
