Hi,
There are a few things to specify like: virtualization platform of the VPS, OS, the resources you need to use, your budget and the project you want to host.
If you post these it will be much easy for anyone to make suggestions.

As fcolor already stated it would help if we knew what your budget was in order to properly recommend a provider. If budget wasn't a concern I would take a look at some of the industry veterans such as servint, media temple, steadfast, etc just to name a few off the top of my head.

If you could provide a little more detail regarding your requirements, like disk space, bandwidth, budget, OS, etc, it would be helpful for people here to point you to some providers.

Thanks for all the helpful responses. Just doing some preliminary investigating and don't have all the details yet as to the scope and size of the site, and exact specs are unknown, but the budget is on the low side, and my initial guess is that it will require fairly minimal CPU, disk space, and bandwidth. Sorry I can't be more exact than that at this time.
Probably will want a managed (I don't know Linux) VPS running Linux and OpenVZ, though I've never used any control panel other than cPanel, so don't know exactly which control panel to choose should the host give me options. I could use some suggestions on that point.
Anyone used KnownHost?

I use theprimehost, they offer managed cpanel VPS and I'm very happy with them. Moved to the from bluehost 3-4 months ago, been zero downtime or problems (that I know of).

Almost every host provide with their Linux VPS solutions cPanel included, so if you are known with it choose cPanel for sure. I can recommend you to try serverpoint, their support team is really helpful and I think it's perfect match to a beginner in Linux

I've been with bluehost for nearly a year and basically happy with them. But they don't offer VPS, so if I want it I'll need to change hosts. So you say theprimehost is good?
On a managed VPS, is it possible to manage it manually as well? I might like to learn how to manage a VPS, but at first I'm not going to know how, so it would be nice to have the control panel but also be able to do things manually.

Dedicated or VPS are more or less similar. Both the hosting options provide you with the security, uptime and full control over the server. It also majorly depends upon your requirements you need to have.
