Reselling Webhosting.
Hi,
I'm thinking about buying a dedicated server and want to set up a "small company" for hosting websites, if not, only for me and my friends. But what should i consider before beginning? What software would i need, how would i set up different kinds of accounts, dns, ip's, nameservers, etc? How would i setup the whole thing, period? My knowledge is there but very limited in this particular subject. It would be nice to be informed with necessary information. Thanks |

this question is pretty vague, but running your own servers requires alot of work. you'll need a webserver, an ftp server, and a mail server if you want emails. you could go through something like www.dyndns.org for your DNS to point to your servers. setting up the servers might not be a problem, but maintaining, securing, and protecting your servers from security vulnerabilities as well as viruses is not at all easy. you will need at least some type of basic programming skills to understand the config files for most servers.
it may be most feasible, especially in your case, to just purchase webspace, and resell. space is generally pretty cheap these days. www.1and1.com is a company i regularly do business with. |

While it can be educational and challenging to maintain your own server to operate web hosting, it can also be dangerous as there are pitfalls that can be pretty damaging to your sites. Keeping a server secure from hackers is one important part of hosting as well and very hard to recover from.
I would suggest starting off with a reseller account with a hosting company and then upgrading as you need to. This way the hassles and headaches of server maintenance are off your shoulders but you can still operate your company comfortably. Roj |
