Some questions about reselling

Hi,
first of all, I'd like to know what you think some good places to become a reseller for and why. Also, I'm not sure that I understand exactly how it works. From what I've read, it looks like you pay $15 a month and you can host as many sites as you want . That doesn't really make sense to me. What if I want to host 100,000 sites!? If it says I can host UNLIMITED sites for that price, then it better let me, but how is that possible? Please let me know anything that you think a beginning reseller (who hasn't started yet, just looking so far) should know.
Thanks, Matt

Matt,

The word unlimited might be over used in the industry but what that means is that you can host as many accounts as you want within the space and bandwidth provided. So if you buy a 1GB space reseller account as an example and decided to give your clients each 100 MB then you will have 10 accounts (sites). If you decided to give your clients 50 MB each then you will have 20 accounts and so on. I hope this makes it clear on how this works.

As for the 100,000 sites (presuming each is 1 account at 20 MB) I don't think it would be possible unless you were to have a reseller package with the minimum of 2 TB of reseller space. That might cost more then $15

Ok, that makes sense. I thought that 'unlimited' sounded too good to be true.

The reseller package that I am looking at comes with 1000mb storage space and 50gb data transfer, how much mb and data transfer do you think each site would use (what is a ballpark for a site under x amount of hits per month)? That is the package that is $15 a month, do you think that is a fair deal?

Thanks, Matt

Sounds like one of them too good to be true deals which typically means problems down the road (i.e lots of downtime, or lack of support).

Do some research on your host, posting and asking for opinons of a host here helps, a lot of people here won't cut down other hosts just to get a better bid (if you post in the Web Hosting forum, if you post in the Web Hosting REQUESTS forum, well that's a cut throat issue.)

Check out http://www.webhostingtips.info - very good site to check out.

Before buying make sure you send out an E-mail to test out their response times, ping their server(s) and if possible download a test file. Some even have phone numbers you can call - call it see if you get them or Nextel sales line (It's been known to happen). Ask them where their servers are physically located, do some research on the datacenter.

If you're going to be a reseller you want to have as much information about your host and their datacenter before you start offering your services to someone else.

What if your host goes down - what are you going to tell your clients? Make sure you can call your host if something happens.
