I had Compuserve and i needed to try out my php scripts, so i installed apache, and it did work. Though it disconnected me every now and then.

But here's a handy tool at http://www.everydns.net. When you sign up, there's this program that you run every two hours or so, it updates the IP your domain is being redirected to. So if you reconnect and your IP changes , the program updates your IP on the site automatically.

I'm a newbie tho.

Hope this helps

Unhappy

I wanted to know if my dial up internet connection will work for hosting my own web server. I will do the work of taking care of dynamic IP once i know that my dial up connection will work for hosting my own server.
My requirement is just to test my server site for max. 1 hour everyday, just to set up a web based software and test it by browsing for not more than hour. Later i will be shutting down my machine..... so i think for a start , is my dial up connection fine ?
bye

abagwe, look at it this way - your dial up won't be able to get any more then 3k/s. What possibly can you host on 3 kbytes per second?

get dsl

I would reccomend a DSL account.
A static IP would be ideal, but dynamic would work also.

here is some info: http://www.diywebserver.com

good luck!
