Hey all,
I'm relatively new in all the web hosting, domain name registration etc etc... and it's quite embarrassing to ask this question... Anyway, here's the situation. I've just registered and paid for a domain name (example.com)... originally, I was using URL redirection for free with my ISP webspace but decided to make it more official with a .com Now, my question is what else do I need to get my website online? Like, can I keep on using my ISP webspace and just re-direct my .com address? Or do I have to buy webspace as well? May seem like a stupid question... and it probably is. If anyone can answer and/or tell me of a good place to get this kind of information from online, I'll really appreciate it. THANKS!!! |

Does your isp have nameservers? if so, point your domain name to that name server in your registar control panel.
Ask your isp for your login info to your free space... once everything is populated with the nameservers and domain name. You should be able to see what you upload. Better yet, it's best to get your hosting from a hosting company rather than your own internet provider. Usually it's note quite what you expected. Alan www.serverpacket.com |

I absolutely agree.
What he is saying is that each domain has to point to a nameserver. A nameserver is software that takes your domain (yourdomain.com or whatever) and turns it into the IP address you want to point to. Your hosting/ISP should provide you with that. When you buy your domain, you should be able to login a control panel and change the nameservers for them. Once you change them to what your ISP tells you, it should direct exactly to your site if they've setup everything for your account. |

The web space most ISPs provide is not compatible with domain names, etc. It is simply some space that you have to access off their domain. You can probably get a domain and setup redirection service to your url though.

This would basically have to do with who you registered your domain with, and what DNS management features they give you.
If your ISP allows you to, you could point your domain to their nameservers (as stated by serverpacket above).. otherwise, forward the domain to your ISP's webspace so you won't need to buy web hosting. If you were looking to use other services such as email with your domain, then it would be best to purchase web hosting. |

Thank you all for your help...
I have registered my domain with netregistry... Their member menus aren't very clear but with the information you all have kindly donated to me, I'm sure I'll be able to work it out somehow. If you have any more tips, let me know! Ta! |

Sorry... one more question...
can someone please give me an example of a nameserver that I would enter? Say if my ISP was Telstra bigpond... what would it be? Is it best to contact my ISP? I think I might do that anyway... Thanks again.. |

The nameserver would be something like ns1.isp.com or ns9.isp.com dns1.isp.com dns20.isp.com
But you wll have to contact them directly for the nameservers |
