Time until page is active ..

Hey, I'm a complete newbie to web design/development/etc. I just purchased a domain name from serverplace.net, and was wondering how long it typically takes for it to become 'active', as in, I can ping the name or upload an index file or some such. This was done today, on Saturday. Thanks in advance for any help!

It's not parked (as in, used to forward to a seperate site?). It's a new name, and as I understand it, they're (or will be) hosting the actual data on their machines. So I suppose it's hosted by serverplace.net or whoever they get their recources from. Was that what you needed from your question?
