Web Hosting Providers

Does anyone know of any webhosts that offer telnet/shell access to an account at the Web Hosting provider that allows you to run your own programs. I want one that will let to run my own technology if I want, flash communication server for example.

Most of payable hosts allow shell access. You're going to have to talk to each host individually if you want to run some app - most of the times is just like content, officially you're not allowed to do some things but when it comes down to money everything can be negotiated.

You'll have to be a bit more specific - eg what kind of price range are you looking at and what you want to get besides shell.

Ofcourse I want what I have now with ipowerweb hosting:java, php, perl. But I also want to be able to upload my own app and run it: jabber, flash communication server, digichat, hubz., mabe a hundrd or two anually.

I reckon you'd be better off checking with www.webhostingtalk.com BTW, is it for production or dev?

It's for a website I am doing called BCFans.com. It will mainly be a chat, message board, news, and instant messaging site for fans, members, and alumni of 1AA football conferences. I don't know if you've ever heard of collegeclub.com, but something similar to that but with more users. I already have about 5 or 6 others sites that I will condense the membership into this site:swacpage.com, swacfans.com,meacfans.com,marchingsport.com, showtimemag.com and thefifthquarter.com. That's about 3,000 common members to all and 5,000 overall members. All these sites we heavy hits on a daily basis, but I see no reason to have this many different sites:for 1AA sports, swac conference, meac conference, HBCU bands,high schools interested in these schools, and overall campus life. One site can cover all of this. But if I want news, chat, instant messaging, forums, shockwave games, flash games, and other apps I want members to be able to play around with, I'll either need to find a host that lets you run your own apps or that has all these technologies I want setup.

Simply put - rent dedicated box. With 5k members and a lot of them simultenously, not many hosting companies will let you slide easily - they will charge you all they can. Get you own server, they're pretty cheap nowadays, your own connex and be your own king.

sounds so simple.. get need to get connec that wont block port 80! and is affordable..
