Web hosting suggestions

Hi all. My account just got sold to another hosting company and they are sucking big time. So I'm going to move to another host once I get access to my files again. Here is what I'm looking for:

Linux
MySQL
POP/SMTP w/ ability to create distribution lists
>= 400MB storage
>= 5GB downstream transfer
Perl, PHP, CGI-BIN
Allows phpBB
<$25 per month

I've found 2 companies that provide some good offers at www.odsol.com and www.affordablehost.com , but I don't know what kind of track record they have.

agiuoco, you might want to check out OnSmart.com as well. I just started with them but have already found their support staff to be knowledgable and responsive. A colleague of mine has been using them for over a year and has had only the occasional minor problem.

OnSmart.com looks good. But it almost seems too good to be true. I don't want to sign up and then have them go under a few months or a year later. I wonder how long they've been in business? The doman name has been registered since 2000. But thanks for the suggestion Gir...I mean jkoerber.

Please dude. I'm looking for objective, semi-non-biased opinions.

agiuoco, well, OnSmart has been around for my colleagues Web site for over a year. You can check his site out at http://www.ecologicalmail.org to get a feel for the speed.

Like I said, I have only been with them a few days after my GoDaddy fiasco, but so far they have been really responsive (answer chat support sessions within 30 seconds), and my site runs fast. My friend has had good luck with them, even with his MySQL database containing over 800,000 customer records!!

They use Cpanel for managing everything about your site and email, and have backup tools and all the rest.

Problem is, there are TOO MANY hosting companies out there these days. I am sure there are dozens of reputable ones under $20/month, the challenge is finding one!

hosttrail, if you are going to recommend the "top 5" Web hosting companies in each category, you need to do your homework! I checked out your top 2 in the co-location category (same as in the other categories) and they don't even offer co-located hosting.

You also need to post what your criteria are for your rankings. Without some background as to "why" you pick one site over another, developers like me that do a little homework are just going to look at you as another site just trying to make a buck through referrals without providing any more value than a good Yahoo, LookSmart, or Google search will produce.

Not to mention that all the links for there recommended hosts are affiliate links.

Well, go for support and the reliability. Or possibly someone who can provide a trial. There was one hoster... $1 trial for first month but I forget the name...

Try contacting the hosting companies for support and see their response time. Monsterhost, who just posted is good themselves.

Yeah, I just emailed OnSmart.net's sales team and the response time was <1 hour. They do have a NQA 30-day money back offer. Things are looking good for OnSmart. Plus I can get a static IP with them.
