I took out a web hosting plan in 2006. The MySQL version is 4.0
I requested my webhost to upgrade to MySQL 4.1 but they said I'd have to purchase a new account. Is this reasonable or should I bring it up again and push for them to upgrade?

Chances are they wont upgrade it on that server due to the fact that it could cause errors on the other sites hosted on that server. Now by buying a new account you would probably be put on a newer server therefore having a newer mysql on it

Drop the host and find a new one. You should be upgrading to v5.0, as it's been the production release for quite awhile now. v5.1 is slated for release soon.

The host have been good to me over the years. I've already paid for the year, so dropping it loses me $80. |

They should refund you the unused portion of your payment if you have yet to use it. They'll probably hide behind their ToS, but a legitimate host should not hold you hostage if you are not going to use the account.

TOS is the thing that must be read very carefully and attentively.

I guess they will only upgrade if alll the accounts on the server will need the updated version. They could have moved your account to a dufferent server with MySQL 4.1 if they had one, but it looks like they don't...
