dedicated/managed hosting help ?
Can anyone recommend a good colocation service plan ? We have several websites that are presently using seperate hosting services/plans. We are not exactly sure of the requirements yet, but the basics are:
- less than 1-10GB disk space total - total bandwidth < 50GB/month - linux, php 5, mysql 4.1, apache 1.3.x, ssl my questions: - is it more common to just give your hardware requirements and have the hosting provider setup a server for you, or do most people build their own, then ship it to the provider ? - what about software installtion, is this an extra fee ? im guessing it is. - what kind of price range am I looking at ? Hello JavaReb,
In answer to some of your questions. Co-location is ranges dependant on the provider and the quality assured by a provider. I have seen it from $150.00 - $3,000.00/mo or even more in some cases so it really depends on what your trying to do and the bandwidth that you would need. Normally in Co-location, you ship all the servers, storage etc to the provider and they hook them all onto their network at a fixed or variable cost dependant on what you agree on. In Terms of software installation, yes. It can be an extra fee dependant on what you have in your contracts when you sign up. In most cases it is. Pricing information, please see above. *************** In terms of inexpensive hosting, why not get a dedicated server from a hosting company? They have techs that can troubleshoot servers and switches faster then you would be able to. For example, if a hard drive goes bad in your server, what would you do? You have to buy a new one and ship it to their location for them to install it. That takes time (which when your hosting there is a lack of). With a hosting company, they normally carry spares, so its perhaps 10 mins to replace the hard drive vs 1 - 2 days. If your intrested in looking at some dedicated servers please take a look here: http://www.indexcore.com/webhosting/ds/ Looking forward to your reply. Denis. |

Yes, dedicated servers would be best for you, we have some very nice servers that you may be interested in, please email me at jdcomputes@sympatico.ca if you want some good prices on dedicated servers. we have servers that range around $100 month. witch would be better then colocation.
