Help me assessing needs please

Hi everyone,

I have been asked to help with building a site. I know little about domain name registration, hosting & web space.

What i know they want is
- to be able to have an online presence
- additional features in the future of posting articles on their site (with commenting facilities),
- Blog
- Being able to put audio files for download.

I don't know about bandwidth either and will need to understand about all this, hence why asking here

If i am to do this i will go with php and a mysql database.

What i want to know is regarding all that they want, how much web space would i need and what kind of hosting features/package will i need? I want to be able to get them the correct package so that they have enough webspace and all the things so it works properly.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Well, basically you need a BLOG and that is it. You post articles and each article has a commenting feature. I think you can attach audio files for download.

What kind of audio files will they host? How big will they be? How long will they last on the site for? These are all relevant questions in terms of space and bandwidth.

Bandwidth means how much is transferred every month. If you visit the site, you are effectively, "downloading" that web page. This is the transfer. If I download an audio file, thats a transfer. This all accumulates and is called Bandwidth.

As was mentioned previously a Blog would suit their needs just fine. What you're going to want to find is a host with a track record, one that will back what they say, and one that is run by someone over 18years old so that they can enter into a legally binding contract per their own Terms of Service/Acceptable Use Policy.

Also look for a host that will work with you and understand your/their growing needs. Start you off at a reasonable package and then be willing to upgrade you on the fly as needed.

Also you may want to consider a Reseller package so that you have a little more control over the account, as well you could host other accounts (if this is something that you're going to be doing frequently).

Avoid "Unlimited" transfer/storage offers. There are physical limitations on such packages - even if their datacenter is offering them "Unmetered" transfer/storage. (Unmetered is different than Unlimited).

A lot of hosts seem to call themselves "CEO" - however this is an elected position and unless they have a Board of Directors there is no way they have a CEO. Founder, owner, are not misleading titles, but CEO can easily be misleading.

Finally, cPanel is one of the more popular control panels available, and I've had customers tell me that it was the easiest Control Panel they've ever dealt with.
