Help with Web Hosting Please..

Ok here is the deal guys. I know there is already a "What do I need to start my web-hosting" section, but the questions I have about it didn't get answered. So, here's my What do I need to start section.

Here is a list of what I have already bought:

Dell PowerEdge 2800 with Windows Server 2003 R2
Now for what is inside this bad boy:

1. Two (2) 3.0GHz / 2MB Cache, Xeon, 800MHz Front Side Bus for PowerEdge 2800 Processors

2. 2GB DDR2 400MHz DIMM's

3. Three (3) 146GB, U320, SCSI Hard Drives

4. Embedded RAID - PERC4 Embedded Intergrated

5. 1.44MB Floppy Drive

6. Dual On-Board NICS ONLY

7. 24X IDE CD-RW/DVD ROM

8. 1X8 Hot Plug SCSI Hard Drive Backplane

9. MR5/N, Drives attached to PERC4ei - RAID5

Ok. That pretty much sums up what is inside the PowerEdge 2800.

I too don't have very much experience with Linux or UNIX, nor do I have alot of experience with the programs run on those OS's. However; I do have some experience in reseller hosting. Keeping the customer in mind I am not setting this server up for selling hosting packages YET! In the future that will happen but for now I have a few friends that have extra sites and what not that they are willing to let me host for trial runs. I too own a few to test on the server. So, with that all said.

Is there anyone here that can help me set this thing up?
I am willing to try anything. In fact I have already set it up with Fedora once and then took it off and went back to Windows Server 2003 R2. So, I will not have a problem if someone has a suggestion trying it...

Thanks in advance guys/gals,
Seminole

- Min of 5Mbps burstable connection with multi home or at least 2 providers.?

- Backup power UPS (for short period) and Generator (for long period)?

- Software Security measure. (handle attack)?

- Hardware replacement in max 4 hours?

- 24 x 7 Reboot? At mid night or during holiday?

- 24 x 7 airconditional room for your server?

Try to get another IP from your provider. If not buy a reseller account with 2 dedicated IP for your DNS purpose.

Going with the 7Mps X 512K

6 Dedicated Stati IP's

going to run about $89.00 a month.....

The provider I am working with can only sell Static IP's in blocks of 5 and they are $24.95 the 5 IP's and 1 Dedicated Static Ip @ 7Mps X 512K was about $65.00

Have you looked into the actual software you will need to run your hosting business?

That is the information I am looking for too.... sorry if the question was a little misleading...

I have Windows Server 2003 and Fedora Core4 installed on the server now! I know there is more that is going to be needed just not sure what or how to install them...

One other thing I was wondering is which OS is the better of the two to run the server on. Windows or Fedora?

If you have any questions about hosting, click on the link in my signature. I'll help you get up and going. You can also email me at info@thehostmanager.com.

There are advantages and disadvantages of both operating systems. The main disadvantage of Windows is the cost, but since you already have it installed I don't think it will be an issue. The advantage of Windows is that you are able to offer your customers both PHP and ASP (which is not possible on a Linux server). This can be a big plus and help you attract more customers.

It seems you have a good setup, and I wish you the best in the hosting industry!

Regards,
Jeff Wickenheiser

EDIT: To be more specific, you can use IIS to run the webserver. You will also want to check out www.php.net if you are looking to offer PHP support (which I recommend). Also take a look at www.mysql.com.
