I need a host...
I'm looking for a shared/reseller/VPS host that can provide the following (in order of importance):
I would quite like root shell access so I could install my own software etc. Another plus would be support for custom PHP.INI files, which I have seen on a few hosts. If it helps, I can get by without the last few items in the list above. When I say PHP sockets I mean functions like socket_create(). I'm looking to pay about £5 - £10 per month, but could pay more for the perfect host.

As per your budget you will get a shared/reseller hosting account but as per your requirement you need a vps or a dedicated server because shared/reseller aren't suitable for streaming audio and you won't get shell access with shared/reseller. So, initially you can start with a vps and later you may upgrade to a dedicated server.

I'm not too bothered about streaming audio so forget that. I think I need a dedicated IP address to use sockets on any port, right? I want to use sockets with Flash and PHP to create real-time, web-based, multi-player games (not commercial games). Can I get by with a cheaper reseller account if I drop some of my requirements? I have been looking at eukhost alot but still not sure. I'm currently paying about £20 per year for my hosting, so £24 per month is a big jump! http://www.bluehost.com offer custom php.ini files and SSH shell access on a shared account for $6.49 per month, but I'm worried about how that affects performance, although I have seen good review of that host.
