Recommend any Hosts Thread

Personally i need a host to provide PHP, RSS, and e-mail capabilities for a bands website. The band is not very big at the moment but popularity could build up. Could anybody recomend a hosting service which i could use and advise me how to go about it?

Also, if you could just post some hosts that you found to be good and why for other readers.

PS: i can run PHP on an Apache server that i made on my PC (i dont really understand the full implications of the whole home server thing and what it is), can i get RSS to work within the server too?

What about the Yahoo! Web Hosting Starter? That seems good but it doesnt do well to explain itself. Anybody familiar with it?

Don't use Yahoo. They over charge for under-resources. Just do a search around on google. Thats my suggestion, most hosts should be able to accomodate you for your requirements.

RSS = Really Simple Syndication, it's just a way of feeding information across the web easily. It has nothing to do with the host.

By the way, what is your budget range?

As for hosting from home, I would have to say that it is usually a bad idea. The amount of bandwidth needed for hosting a site and serving dynamic content will usually not load efficiently over DSL/Cable.

I would definitely not recommend Yahoo! or Godaddy. Both I have had bad experiences with. Horrible customer service for one thing.

thanx for the info everybody.

I am just looking into the idea at the moment really.

In response to Jach though, by 9.99 a month does that cover a domain name and web hosting or is it just hosting?
if just hosting, how much does a domain name generally cost and are there any hidden/extra costs?

dreamhost rocks, bro. especially since you're doing a band site and you'll probably but music and videos up there, dreamhost gives you tons of space and bandwidth which would come in really handy.

DONT HOST YOUR OWN STUFF ON A PHP SERVER AT HOME! it's way too much of a hassle! you have to constantly upgrade your security or else you'll get hacked and people will own your box.

MudSlinger disagrees: DreamHost sucks just like godaddy yahoo 1&1 and more. DO NOT GO WITH ANY OVERSELLERS

Hello,

Well, $9.99/Month only includes Hosting services along with cPanel ofcourse, and if in case you also want to register a new domain, then the cost for registerations is $15/Year irrespective of Domain choice (.com/.org/.co.uk etc.). There are no additional hidden cost.

Regards

Ok for one dont go with common hosting companies they over charge. Also dont choose companies that give almost unlimited resources, this is a practice used to shock and awe customers. Just because your getting more doesnt mean your going to use it all. It also warrants the question are customers accounts overlapping.

Lets just say that a company offers a plan that gives 100GB's of space. This company already has another 20 people buying this plan. So in order to host all of these people by law they would need 2000GB's, also 2 TB's. Some companies however give large amounts of space to attract customers, but truthfully they never expect you to use that much space and if you did you would never know as they would just increase the space. This is usually employed by companies with either a very low customer base and those with that of an extreme large one with extra cash.

Since your band is just starting out you probably wont need much space but what you should be thinking about is bandwidth because when fans start visiting that is the real thing you will need. Without bandwidth noone would be able to veiw your site so in the end what you pay for is bandwidth(the gas of a website).

Well thats my little bit. Heres a few plans from the company I work for:
