Web Host Requests
Hey folks:
Many questions for you all: We're going to start out small, but hopefully grow... the maximum traffic in the absolute worst case we project is 4.5TB monthly. 1) What do people who build web-apps typically do when they have an app that could really skyrocket? 2) We're also looking for something like - 250 GB Raid 0 Array (250gb x 2) - at least 10mbps standard - processor, something decent - 512 preferrably 1gig of ram - linux, mysql, ruby on rails or php installed - budget $100-150/mo Any suggestions? 3) What is this 95% billing stuff I'm reading about? 4) Would getting 10mbps unmetered and paying for bandwidth separately be the best waay to go? 5) Can you get bursts above 10mbps if the application demands it? How does this work & how do you get billed? Thanks! |

1) If you feel your application is going to use this much bandwidth and have this much usage you may want to look into a load balanced solution with proper fault tolerance and backups. Otherwise one hardware failure and your dead in the water
2) The server specs your looking for would be hard to do for the price your asking for, especially with your bandwidth requirements. 3) For a detailed definition including statistical examples you can visit http://www.servicelevel.net/rating_...ers/issue13.htm 4) If you need 4.5Tb of monthly transfer you may want a full 10Mb dedicated connection with no transfer limit. This would allow for proper future expansion 5) Depends on the contract you have with your bandwidth provider. Some will charge you an average of your monthly bandwidth, some may charge you based on your transfer. My company cannot provide you with the solutions you are looking for, however, I feel the above information may be helpful for you. Quote:

Ok... but the 4.5TB number is where we'd love to be after five to six months of doing this... reasonable in the midterm is somewhere 1.0 - 2.5 TB... 4.5 is the absolute worst case we woudln't soon get to. |

eBoundHost
You'll need to look into dedicated servers. Check out eBoundHost's capabilities here: http://www.eboundhost.com/hosting/dedicated/
As far as 4.5 TB goes, we offer up to 3 TB normally and bill, as with most companies, per GB after that (usually $0.50 per GB). Please call us for details. |
