It sounds like, as you suggest, finding a reliable host that allows easy upgrades is the way forward for you. I would suggest a few GB disk space to begin with - Wordpress, whilst good, isn't particularly light weight IMO.
Most hosts have an installation system so this isn't usually a problem to find. With us, we provide Fantastico.
Here's our pitch. GigaTux, a UK-based provider, is fast (with databases on SSDs) and super reliable. We're not the absolute cheapest though, but if you're happy to spend a few pounds a month, you'll get a decent service.
I recommend starting off with our Apprentice package:
- 10 GB disk
- 50 GB data transfer
- Up to 2 domains
For £59.88/year (equivalent to £4.99) per month. Our Noob package might even work (0.5 GB disk) at only an equivalent of £1.99 per month.
Check these out on our web hosting page.

Hi Gaffer. I am using Bluehost for $4.95 per month. No need to upgrade because you get everything you need in with that special offer price plus you get a free domainname.com It has everything you need in the cPanel, simplescript, WordPress etc. Easy to use, very fast.
Unlimited domain names and email accounts
More space than you will need gaffer
Free domain when you setup
Free Site Builder w/ templates
Secure Shell, SSL, FTP, Stats
CGI, Ruby (RoR), Perl, PHP, MySQL
$100 Free Google Credit
24/7 Phone, Chat & Email Support
The online chat support is really good. I hate having to wait for email response. Let me know about ads when your site is up and running.
To take a look at it go to my website manualsipad.com
Bluehost is at the bottom of my homepage. The ad says $6.95 but if you click on that ad you can get it for $4.95.
Good luck with your site and finding your "Killer" domain.

Reliability, support service quality (24 x 7) and uptime guarantee with SLA.
+ 1 to this as this is how one should start approaching if the website is new and still to be launched.
@gaffer - As you mentioned most of the data of your website will be in for form of articles, reviews and forums (all of text format mostly) so you will not require that much amount of resources so don't think that much about resources and price, just think about reliability, support service quality (24 x 7) and uptime guarantee with SLA.

Did you find any solution yet? I'd suggest to look at the offers section, where good hosting deals are available.
