Which Web Host?

Hi All,

am fairly new to all this web development malaki. Well, not really, i've used FrontPage 2000/2003 in the past, to create my eBay adverts and i understand the basic notion of FTP. I have some webspace with (URL address blocked: See forum rules) , which i use purely to host my images, which i link into my ebay adverts created with FrontPage.

However, now i am totally sick and tired of eBay and PayPal policies. I was a powerseller with way over a rating of 5000 with only 3 negatives. Recently, they suspended my account with no notice. There excuse? To protect the safety and integrity of other eBay users! As you can tell, i was well and truly pi$$ed!!!

I simply refuse to use PayPal and eBay now and thought, maybe now is the time for me to develop my own website to sell my products. I've been thinking about doing this for a while, but just haven't got around to doing it, being tied up with eBay sales, but now this has really given me the push.

Having looked at FrontPage, which i am quite comfortable with, it seriously has its limitations, in-terms of online shopping. Instead my attention has turned to actinic and oscommerce.

Now onto web hosting...having looked at my web host package, it seems to be a very basic one. I uploaded oscommerce catalog and extras folder along with phpMyAdmin to have a play, only to find that my hosting package does not support php / MySql...gutted!

So my question is, could anyone suggest a stable hosting package for a new domain name, which supports php (oscommerce) / MySql? I'd prefer it to be in the UK, just for ease of customer support if i need it.

Are there any other things, which need to be taken into consideration, which i am missing? I'd expect to be doing online transactions also via credit card, etc too.

Look forward to replies.

Best Regards

Hello, how are you? I'm sorry to hear about your misfortunes with PayPal. osCommerce is a very great free commerce script. X-Cart is another option you may want to look into. It isn't free but it is incredible affordable.

As far as processing credit cards is concerned, you definitely want to look into your own merchant account. Having the ability have full control over every aspect of the charging process is imperative. Check out www.paid2charge.com for some recommendations on merchant accounts.
